Violence Outbursts during 'Black Lives Matter' Protest in Belgium

Some police officers were injured when violence and looting violated on the sidelines of black life, material demonstrations in East Belgium Liege City on Saturday, police said.

The parade was held to protest a woman's arrest for "rebellion" in the city on Monday who had accused the police of racism, a police spokesman said.

The police have refused the accusation, claiming that the woman refused arrest.
The spokesman said that on Saturday "young people joined the group of peaceful protesters and then left the demonstration to go and bankrupt the city center".

They "threw stones at the Central Police Station and police vehicles," he told AFP.

An officer on a motorcycle knocked on the ground and was attacked in a hospital, while several other officers were also injured, he added.

"We deal with two hundred young people, 'Casseurs', which moves very fast, in groups, and looting stores."

"Casseurs" is the term French translated as "breaker" and describes black dress protesters who infiltrate protests to destroy property and provoke clashes with the police.

"They ransacked all McDonald's," said a spokesman in the city in the Belgian French-speaking Wallonia region.

Police reinforcements are being deployed to deal with problems and at the end of Saturday, the Calm City Center has been restored.

Police urged residents not to go to the city center, and the mayor had notified shops in the affected area to close.
